Wellfield Athletic AFC have been in the Carmarthenshire League for many years, even going back to the early 1960's, when they reached the semi-finals of the West Wales Cup.
In the early 1970's they were run as a nursery team for Seaside AFC, with the same committee, chairman, treasurer etc. But at the end of the 1976 season, a certain David Craddock had other ideas. He went on a recruiting drive and signed several new players from top clubs including Dai Casey, Ernie Pope and Graham Edwards from Dafen, Clive Pewsey from Trostre and Steve Brown and Tony Price from Seaside. Under the management of Phil Lewis and captaincy of Dai Casey, Wellfield won the 2nd Division Championship beating off a strong challenge from Waterloo FC.
At the end of the season the Wellfield contingent at the camp decided to break away from Seaside AFC totally and go it alone. After many meetings between the two sides at their headquarters, the Cornish Arms in Seaside, Wellfield and Seaside parted. Seaside refused to leave the Wellfield name go, hence the 'Athletic' Tag. Wellfield Athletic's first headquarters was at the Vine Inn in Station Road. In their first season, the team finished in 4th Position in Division One and reached the semi final of the Challenge Cup but unfortunately lost 2-1 to Gowerton at Llanerch.
The mid-eighties saw a decline in playing standards and relegation down to Division 3 followed. Promotion back to Division 2 followed in 1989, only losing the championship by a point to Penygaer. The following season was a poor one, again resulting in relegation. But in 1991, the club won the Divison 3 Championship in some style by winning every league game except for a 3-3 draw at home to Trinity College. The side was run by player/manager Mal Jones and included the likes of centre forward Brain Bowen. By that season, Wellfield's headquarters were at the Waterloo in Station Road. Various headqaurters were used. Before then we called at the George & Dragon, the Prince's Head In West End and the Dynevor Arms in Market Street.
In 1993, the reserve team had its best season by winning promotion from reserve division 3 in great style by winning their last nine games all away from home. In 1995, the 1st team reached the Challenge Cup Semi-Final only to lose 3-2 against Ammanford.
The club tried to gain promotion from Division Two for years without success. But they finally achieved this goal in 1998 guided by manager Johnny Garcia. But unfortunately they came straight back down the following season. The club achieved promotion once again in 2009 this time with Andrew Kirkhouse in charge, only missing out on the championship by 1 point after a 1-1 draw with champions Felinfoel in the last game of the season.
Wellfield's 1st cup final didn't come until 2010, when the very promising and talented young Wellfield side reached the final of the Challenge Cup, but unfortunately they lost 1-0 in extra time. In the same season, the reserves dominated Reserve Division 3, comfortably winning the league and also reached the semi-finals of the Darch Cup.
It is hopeful that with a determined young side and a strong setup at the club, Wellfield can push forward in the coming years, gain promotion once again and go on to be the best side in Carmarthenshire. |
