The first competitive match of this season saw the first team face 3rd Division outfit Llanelli 'A' in the Star Cup. Even with key players missing it was planned to be a routine win for Wellfield.
It was the A's who almost took the lead very early on when an ambitious effort from far out was well saved by keeper Darren Greene. From then on Wellfield seemed to have control of possession but the A's did well to disrupt the play and prevent the away side taking the lead. Simon 'Slim' Evans and Steffan Youngman came close but their efforts didn't quite give Wellfield the lead they wanted at half-time.
Half-Time: Llanelli 'A' 0-0 Wellfield Athletic
After the break Wellfield came out stronger and quickly took the lead. It came from a spectacular strike by Chris Hickey whose long range shot curled into the top corner. Wellfield soon doubled their lead when Simon 'Slim' Evans tapped the ball in from Hickey's cross. Stephen Greene made it 3-0 when he calmly finished after breaking through on goal minutes later. Substitute Chris James latched on to a through ball to tuck away a fourth for the away side. James had a great opportunity to double his tally as he was only centimetres away from the ball at the back post to head into an empty net from inches out.
Final Score: Llanelli 'A' 0-4 Wellfield Athletic
Wellfield will be pleased with this victory and will hope to follow it up with a victory against Calsonic next Saturday. |
