The final group game of the Star Cup for Wellfield saw us face last seasons Premier Division champions Seaside. It was always going to be a big ask for the home side to get any sort of result in this game.
Seaside got the game underway and started the stronger side testing the Wellfield defence early on. It was Lee Stone who had the first clear cut chance of the game but his effort was well saved by Darren Greene. Minutes later Steve Stone's spectacular volley went inches wide of the goal to deny what would have been a great goal. Seaside finally got off the mark though when Jamie Bowen broke through on goal. His effort was well saved by Greene but the ball then fell to Steve Stone who put the ball into the empty net. Seaside were soon 2 up when Chris Dawe broke through and finished from close range. Gavin Morris came closest for Wellfield but he fired his free-kick wide from the edge of the area. Then after great link up play with Steve Stone, Jamie Bowen scored a truly spectacular goal when he struck the ball into the top corner from 30 yards.
Half-Time: Wellfield Athletic 0-3 Seaside
After a poor first half display, Wellfield came out in the second half stonger, looking to get themselves back in the game. There was more urgency to the home side as we started to test the Seaside defence. But the away side remained strong and used their strength to keep Wellfield out. But it was Seaside who got the first goal of the half. It came when Steve Stone was given enough time to chest down a cross and smash the ball past Greene. But Wellfield still battled to get a goal back. After a good passing move from the back Ryan Williams' strike went wide of the goal. Rob Kirkhouse also had a good chance but his quick free-kick didn't have enough pace on it so Seaside keeper Darren Evans saved easily. It was Steffan Youngman who came closest though as he latched onto a through ball but his effort bounced onto the post and across the face of goal. But Seaside were then awarded a penalty for hand ball against Nick Glendon, who was making his first ever first team appearance for the club. It was Steve Stone who finished the penalty to make it 5-0. This seemed to dishearten Wellfield who soon conceded again when Jamie Bowen headed a cross into the bottom corner to finish off the game.
Full-Time: Wellfield Athletic 0-6 Seaside
Seaside had control of the game today from the off. But Wellfield must now pick themselves up and get back on track with the start of the season drawing closer. The next first team game will be a home friendly against West End next Saturday where Wellfield will be definately looking to get back to winning ways. Unfortunately for us Calsonic beat Llanelli 'A's 15-0 today which means that they will go through to the next round of the competition. |
