After a disappointing result last Saturday, it was important that Wellfield picked themselves up for todays game to get their first points of the season. But nobody predicted what was about to happen in this game that saw 4 red cards.
Pontlliw started the stronger of the two sides and were the first team to put pressure on their opponent through creating chances. But the back 4 worked hard to ensure that they didn't concede early on. Keeper Darren Greene was called upon early on and was forced to make some important saves to keep Wellfield in the game. Pontlliw came closest when their pacey left winger broke down the left whose effort was slowed by Greene, but required his brother Stephen to stop the ball rolling over the line. Wellfield starting to improve and finally put some pressure on their opponents through Johnny Thomas and Steffan Youngman who both worked hard together up front. But just before the break, the game turned Wellfield's way. It came when the Pontlliw forward put a late challenge in on keeper Greene who had just collected a cross. The referee showed the player his second yellow card who played no further part in the game. But with only minutes left in the first half, Wellfield failed to take advantage before the break.
Half-Time: Wellfield Athletic 0-0 Pontlliw
With one extra man, Wellfield came out more confident and started to finally test the Pontlliw keeper. Johnny Thomas came close when his free-kick was deflected towards the bottom corner only for the keeper to deny him. The home side continued to create some decent chances but failed to make any of them count and take the lead. But the deadlock was finally broken through Steffan Youngman. When Johnny Thomas dribbled himself past a couple of defenders and squared the ball, Steffan Youngman was left to tap the ball into the goal. But things were to get worse for the visitors a few minutes later. When Johnny Thomas forced his way around the Pontlliw centre back, he was pulled back and brought down in the box. The defender was sent off for his foul and Johnny Thomas was left to slot the ball into the bottom corner to double the lead. But just when victory seemed certain for Wellfield, even with 9 men, Pontlliw managed to get themselves back in the game. A free-kick was awarded just outside the Wellfield box and the kick taker did well to smash the ball into the bottom corner. Just as Wellfield kicked the game off again the Pontlliw forward stole the ball off the forwards and run at the defence. Alun Bevan rashly dived and fouled the player and after reacting to antagonising Pontlliw players was shown a harsh red card. Pontlliw were now back in the game and were pushing forward to try and grab an equaliser. They had a couple of opportunities to level the scores but Wellfield defended well with Darren Greene making a couple of decent saves to keep them at bay. But another rash tackle, this time from a Pontlliw player, resulted in the referee showing his red card once again. The Pontlliw defence was now exposed and Ryan Williams scored 5 minutes from time to put the game beyond doubt. He did well to break through on goal and although his origional effort was saved by the keeper, he did enough to scramble the ball over the line. With two extra men all that was left for Wellfield to do was to keep the ball and leave time run out.
Full-Time: Wellfield Athletic 3-1 Pontlliw
This evenings game saw a much improved performance compared to last Saturday's defeat to Trallwm. Pontlliw were a much more physical side and our young team did well to match their strong players. Even though the game was scrappy the result will undoubtably please manager Andrew Kirkhouse who will be happy to get the 3 points today. With points on the board we can now look forward and try to get the same again against Ponthenri on Saturday. |
