After salvaging a draw against a tough Ponthenri side last Saturday, Wellfield were determined to get all 3 points this time round as they faced Garden Village, who were looking to get off the mark after losing their first two games.
Both sides started well and were searching for an early goal, but neither side was able to find any advantage. Wellfield defended well and didn't give Village any chances to get a good shot off. But at the other end of the pitch, it was a different story. There were clear holes in the Village defence and this gave Wellfield a number of opportunities in the first half. Johnny Thomas and Steffan Youngman worked hard together upfront and it soon payed off as the two combined to give Wellfield the lead. When Johnny broke down the right flank his square ball left Steff to calmly put the ball past the home keeper. Wellfield continued to put pressure on Village and should have taken a further lead. Johnny Thomas had a couple of great opportunities to get a goal of his own and he will be disappointed that he didn't take these chances. But Garden Village stuck at it and got a goal of their own when a low cross from out wide was put past Wellfield keeper Darren Greene. But disaster soon struck for Wellfield as Village took the lead themselves just minutes later. When Wellfield gave the ball away cheaply in the opposition half, a quick through ball caught out the defence and after Greene left himself in no mans land the forward rounded him to finish into the empty net. Chris Hickey came close to getting an equaliser just before the break but his long range effort bounced off the bar.
Half-Time: Garden Village 2-1 Wellfield Athletic
Wellfield were obviously disappointed to be going into the second half a goal down and to make things worse were now playing against the wind. Village were looking to increase their lead and were using their height up front to try and do so. Centre backs Chris Whitton and Simon Evans did well to prevent the home side from getting any clear cut chances. Village did manage to create themselves some half chances but some decent saves from Darren Greene kept them out. Stephen Greene then handed the ball just outside the box which earned him a yellow card and gave Village a great opportunity to increase the lead. But the free-kick was struck poorly and easy to save for the Wellfield keeper. Just when things were looking bad for the visitors, Johnny Thomas levelled the scores with a great shot from 30 yards that swerved past the keeper. But then after a mix up down the left Stephen Greene got caught out and fouled the village winger to earn himself his second yellow of the game. Wellfield battled hard and even with 10 men pushed forward at times to try and get a winner, but it wasn't meant to be and both teams shared the points on this occasion.
Full-Time: Garden Village 2-2 Wellfield Athletic
After another hard working performance Wellfield will be slightly disappointed not to get more from the match. The next match for Wellfield is this Saturday against Carmarthen Town Reserves. Last season, Carmarthen missed out on promotion through goal difference even after getting 15 points deducted. |
