After a very poor display against West End last week, although it was a friendly, Wellfield were determined to pick themselves up for todays friendly against newly promoted Division 2 outfit Llangennech.
The home side started strong and moved the ball around well creating some decent chances for new signing Johnny Thomas. It didn't take long until Wellfield had taken the lead too. It came when Andrew Messer scrambled the ball in from the rebound off Johnny Thomas' effort. Minutes later Steffan Youngman was fouled inside the area and there were no complaints when Wellfield were awarded a penalty. Youngman confidently took the ball to take the penalty, but it was poorly taken which made it easier for the keeper to save. Johnny Thomas got a goal of his own soon after when he broke through on goal. He slotted the ball into the bottom corner to double the lead. Llangennech didn't get a chance to test the opposing keeper in the first half. Most of their attacking moves were defended well by the home defence, but when a Llangennech forward Gavin Williams finally did break free on goal and seemed certain to score, Alun Bevan put in a great tackle to prevent the forward getting a shot off. Wellfield managed to grab another goal just before the break. This came when Darren Greene's long kick was flicked on by Johnny Thomas to put Steffan Youngman through on goal who finished well.
Half-Time: Wellfield Athletic 3-0 Llangennech
Going into the second half 3 goals up was a great confidence boost for Wellfield which encouraged them to play good football. Working the ball around well the home side created some decent chances and had soon scored again when Bobby Vaughan's long range effort was fumbled by the keeper before rolling over the line. But Johnny Thomas took the limelight once again 5 minutes later when he scored a screamer from 35 yards out. But Llangennech caught Wellfield napping 10 minutes from time when Gavin Williams scored a header from close range.
Full-Time: Wellfield Athletic 5-1 Llangennech
With a much improved performance by Wellfield, things are starting to look positive once again with the season drawing closer. There were 2 good debut performances by Johnny Thomas and Alun Bevan and with left winger Leigh Williams also signing today the squad is starting to look stronger with some good competition for places. The next game is a home friendly this Tuesday against Swansea based Wales Tarten. |
