After a great victory against last years champions Johnstown on the weekend, it was important that Wellfield followed it up with a victory this evening.
Wellfield didn't get off to a great start and didn't seem to be interested in the game at all. Dafen took the lead 1st when the Wellfield defence stood off the forwards and a great volley from outside the box looped over Skinner into the top corner. But this seemed to wake Wellfield up who immediately started putting pressure on Dafen. Mikey Charles soon grabbed an equaliser after his hard work up front. Wellfield continued to push to get the lead with Rubin Rai having a great opportunity, but he dragged his shot wide. Wellfield continued to push forward and Matthew Cooke was given a good chance which he finished well to give Wellfield the lead. But it only lasted a couple of minutes as Dafen broke at the other end to grab a surprise equaliser. Wellfield were once again lefted looking for the lead once again and after creating many chances up front managed to go up 3-2 when Mikey Charles scored his second of the game.
Half-Time: Dafen Welfare 2-3 Wellfield Athletic
Wellfield were undoubtably disappointed to not go into the second half with a greater lead. After playing some better football and keeping the ball more, Wellfield just couldn't get the success in the final third of the pitch. But Mikey Charles grabbed his hat-trick when he broke free on goal and finished past the Dafen keeper. Wellfield should have killed the game off but the home side were determined they could get something from the game and battled on. The home side did get themselves back in the game just 5 minutes from the end when they scored on the counter attack. All Wellfield had to do was see the game out by keeping the ball but they failed to do so and Dafen grabbed an equaliser in the last minute of the game.
Full-Time: Dafen Welfare 4-4 Wellfield Athletic
A very disappointing result for Wellfield as they failed to see the game off and allowed Dafen back into the game. There seemed to be a lack of desire from some players which cost Wellfield the game. But all is not lost and it is vitally important that Wellfield pick themselves up and use this game as a wake up call for the season. |
