After getting knocked out of the Senior Cup last week against Felinfoel in extra-time, Wellfield were determined to pick themselves up for todays West Wales Cup tie against Division 3 outfit Penllergaer. Wellfield were expected to win this game easily but Penllergaer is always a tough place to play and they are a very physical side.
Wellfield started the game playing 3-5-2 for the first time this season and were hit hard from the off with Penllergaer finding space out wide. The home side took the lead after 2 minutes when keeper Darren Greene was caught off his line and lobbed from 20 yards out. Penllergaer continued to press and found themselves 2 up soon after when a corner was headed in at the front post. Wellfield were struggling and were clearly digging themselves into further trouble. After just 10 minutes since kick-off, Chris Whitten's late tackle at the edge of area was given as a penalty but fortunately for Wellfield the penalty was hit wide. Andrew Kirkhouse needed to change things and moved Liam Davies from centre midfield to right back and pushed Nick Glendon to left back to adopt a 4-4-2 formation. Wellfield seemed more comfortable with this and for the first time in the match started to look like scoring a goal themselves. Ryan Williams and Leigh Williams did well out wide and put in some good balls which weren't put into the back of the net. Steffan Youngman and Andrew Messer were working hard upfront as well in order to find space and put Wellfield in some dangerous positions. Andrew Messer got a goal back for Wellfield when he superbly weaved through the opposition to finish from 6 yards. Penllergaer were hanging on and Ryan Williams came close to an equaliser when he smashed the ball against the post when he looked certain to score. A corner from Ryan then found Nick Glendon in loads of space just yards from goal but his header went wide. But Nick Glendon did create an equaliser when his long ball forced a mix up between the keeper and defender leaving Andrew Messer to tap in from close range and get his second of the game.
Half-Time: Penllergaer 2-2 Wellfield Athletic
Wellfield came out searching for the lead but struggled to find that killer pass to create a goal. A direct long ball from Darren Greene left Bobby Vaughan through on goal but his weak header fell kindly to the keeper. Leigh Williams was creating some good chances down the left but Wellfield just couldn't grab a lead. As time wore on Wellfield seemed to panic a little bit and started to get a bit desperate with their play, leaving them exposed at the back. This gave Penllergaer some great opportunities to take the lead themselves. After a good break away from the home side, the Penllergaer forward was left through on goal but Greene somehow managed to turn the ball onto the crossbar. Just minutes later the home forward broke through once again but another great save from Greene kept Wellfield in the game. After a good switch ball from Ryan, Leigh Williams and Andrew Messer linked up well leaving Leigh through on goal, he finished well giving Wellfield the lead for the first time in the match. Leigh almost grabbed another soon after when he flicked the ball over the centre back and hit it on the volley the other side, but this time his shot was straight at the keeper. Penllergaer pushed everyone forward as they tried to grab an equaliser and they thought they had it when a low cross was put into the back of the net in the last minute, only for the goal to be ruled out as offside.
Full-Time: Penllergaer 2-3 Wellfield Athletic
Wellfield clearly made hard work of this match after gifting Penllergaer what could have been the game after the first 10 minutes. But Wellfield did well to fight back and will be pleased that they are in the draw for the next round. |
