It was vitally important that Wellfield lifted their game for todays match with Tumble following last weeks poor performance against Suburbs. Andrew Kirkhouse had some tough decisions to make for todays game as for the first time this season he had near a full squad to choose from.
There wasn't much between the sides for the first 15 minutes but Wellfield did look the more likely team to take the lead. Wellfield were playing the ball around the pitch much better than last week and their hard work was soon rewarded with a goal. It came when a miss-hit shot from Rob Kirkhouse fell kindly to Johnny Thomas who did well to guide the ball past the keeper. Wellfield almost doubled their lead soon after when Johnny Thomas' low shot was well saved by the Tumble keeper and Leigh Williams' follow up effort was blocked by the defender. Tumble did create a good chance of their own but Darren Greene did well to push the shot wide of the goal. The visiting team were playing some good football at times and linked up passes well to get the ball in some dangerous positions. Wellfield looked the more likely side to score the next goal but didn't manage to do so before the break.
Half-Time: Tumble 0-1 Wellfield Athletic
Following a good first half display Wellfield were determined to kill the game off early. But Tumble, as expected, weren't going to give up easily and would battle right to the last minute. Tumble had a good chance to get themselves back in the game when their winger broke free, but Greene did well to parry the shot away. Wellfield managed to get themselves another goal when a long kick from Greene caught out the Tumble defence and Johnny Thomas gave the keeper no chance with his finish. But Tumble didn't give up and put the Wellfield defence under some real pressure. But Ryan Williams, Chris Whitten, Nick Glendon and Stephen Greene, who all had great performances, remained solid to keep Tumble out. Darren Greene was called upon again on a couple of occasions when he was forced to save a free-kick and a header. Leigh Williams killed the game off though when he was left unmarked following Johnny Thomas' square ball and he finished well to complete the scoring.
Full-Time: Tumble 0-3 Wellfield Athletic
A great result and a great performance today that Andrew Kirkhouse will be delighted with. After conceding so many goals already this season it was a relief to finally earn a clean sheet with a great defensive display. It was also good to see Wellfield playing some good football again and making the most out of their chances. Wellfield's next game will be against Loughor, looking to stop their 100% record this season. |
