After winning 5 games in a row, it was always going to be a big ask for Wellfield to carry their good run on as they faced Swansea based Penlan Club in the West Wales Cup. Penlan are a physical, but good side and currently lie in 4th place in the top division in Swansea.
Wellfield were going into the game as underdogs and Penlan were certainly surprised when Chris James lobbed the keeper, following Rob Kirkhouse chip through ball, to give the home side the lead after minutes into the game. Penlan tried to get themselves back in the game straight away but Alun Bevan and Chris Whitten defended well to keep the scoreline in Wellfield's favour. But Penlan did manage to break down the back 4 eventually and the right winger did well to slide the ball into the bottom corner. Wellfield didn't sit back though and weren't intimidated by the physical nature of the Penlan side. Wellfield had a penalty appeal turned down when Rob Kirkhouse was brought down in the box, but the referee thought the defender played the ball. Penlan continued to put pressure on the Wellfield defence by pumping the ball into the box at any opportunity but nothing came from this. But Wellfield took the lead once again when Steff Youngman's corner curled into the back post. Leigh Williams had a good chance when he broke free down the left but his shot was parried wide by the visiting keeper. Penlan seemed disheartened that they were down and perhaps should have been down to 10 men at the break after their left winger deliberately tried to headbutt Alun Bevan. He only saw a yellow card for his actions and Wellfield went into the break with the lead.
Half-Time: Wellfield Athletic 2-1 Penlan Club
After a stern talking to at half-time Penlan were determined to come out and get an early goal. But Wellfield had proved in the first half that they wern't going to get pushed over easily. Penlan were having the majority of the possession but couldn't find a way through. Penlan had a good chance to equalise but Darren Greene made a good save to keep out a close range header from a corner. A through ball from Steffan Youngman then found Chris James who did well to finish when 1 on 1 which increased Wellfield's lead to 3-1. Penlan were getting slightly impatient but were working the ball into some decent positions and causing Wellfield some trouble at the back. But with 15 minutes left on the clock, Penlan went down to 10 men. It was the same player who received a yellow for his headbutt on Alun Bevan at the end of the first half. But this time he received a red card after a disgracefully late 2 footed lunge that caught Darren Greene in the jaw. Chris James did get a chance to get his hat-trick but his shot was pushed wide by the Penlan keeper. Wellfield saw the game out to get a deserved result against a strong side.
Full-Time: Wellfield Athletic 3-1 Penlan Club
A fantastic result for Wellfield against a top side in the Swansea league. Andrew Kirkhouse will undoubtably be pleased that Wellfield's young side were able to cope physically with Penlan. Over the last month, Wellfield have proved that they are a good side and this result backs that statement up. |
