Wellfield's last match was the West Wales Cup game 6 weeks ago against Brynawel. It was clear that the players hadn't played in a while with some sloppy football being played thoughout. The pitch didn't help matters either which cut up pretty badly due to the amount of rain we've received in recent weeks.
The referee didn't turn up so one of the opposition substitutes volunteered to control the game. There were some poor challenges let go early on and it seemed like it would be a long afternoon. But just 5 minutes into the match, the ref showed up and took his role. Not long after he took charge Wellfield found themselves infront. It came when Ryan Williams broke through the middle of the pitch and placed the ball in the bottom corner from 20 yards. Ryan also picked up a yellow card for a late tackle on the opposing player. But Killay bounced back and almost got themselves level. They played their way into the box and after some good dribbling hit a shot towards the top corner but Darren Greene spectacularly tipped the ball away. Killay weren't giving Wellfield an inch and made it very hard to pass the ball around. But Wellfield managed to find another way through when a long ball from Greene found Leigh Williams outwide, who supplied a great cross for Ryan to tap in his second of the game. But the 2 goal lead didn't last long after Darren Greene mishit a rushed goal kick, playing it to the centre forward who placed the ball past Greene. Killay tried to find an equaliser before the break but Wellfield's back 4 kept their shape well to ensure there was no way through.
Half-Time: Killay 1-2 Wellfield Athletic
Both teams knew that they could win the game and it would come down to who wanted it more. Wellfield were obviously in a more comforting position though by holding a 2-1 lead. Killay were certainly showing that they were no pushovers and threw everything at Wellfield in the second half, but the visitors weathered the storm to keep the advantage intact. Nick Glendon earned himself a yellow card for deliberately handing the ball when his marker tried to knock it past him. A dubious referee decision gave a great opportunity to Killay, when their forward was coming back from an offside position and a long clearance from their defence bounced behind the visiting defence. To everyone's amazement the ref called to play on but the forward fluffed his chance and shot over the bar. Killay were getting the better of the play and an equaliser kind of seemed iminant. Wellfield's defence remained solid and calm though and kept chances at a minimum. Killay came close once again when their winger tucked inside and shot but his powerful effort was tipped onto the bar by Greene. Captain Ryan Williams picked up an injury with 10 minutes left and manager Andrew Kirkhouse took his place in the middle alongside Bobby Vaughan, who had a great game, dealing with the muddy conditions well. With once final push, Killay managed to create one final chance, when the ball fell to the forwards feet just 15 yards out. But his shot was poorly placed and Greene comfortably saved with his feet. Wellfield managed to see out the final few minutes to get a crutial victory.
