Wellfield's opponents today were Trostre, who were relegated from the Premier Division last season and have been poor this year as well. Wellfield were able to add a little experience to their starting line-up today with Simon Evans at the back and captain Ryan Williams in the middle of the park.
Wellfield played some attractive football throughout the first half even though the pitch was badly cut up. Wellfield almost took the lead on a couple of occasions with Leigh Williams missing a sitter at the back post and the home keeper just getting to the ball to deny Johnny Thomas a great chance. Steff Whitten dragged a powerful effort wide of the goal but it wasn't all going Wellfield's way. Trostre hit the bar with a great header from a corner and when their winger broke down the flank he seemed certain to square the ball to his open teammate, but he shot straight at Darren Greene. Wellfield did take the lead though and this time Johnny Thomas beat the keeper to the ball and after doing well to get past him, he tapped the ball in from close range. Ryan Williams doubled that lead 10 minutes later when he smashed the ball past the keeper from an acute angle.
Half-Time: Trostre 0-2 Wellfield Athletic
Wellfield seemed to have a comfortable lead at the break and were keen to grab an early goal to kill the game off. But Trostre had other ideas and weren't planning on giving in at all. Steff Youngman had a fantastic opportunity to increase the lead but he managed to shoot over from 1 yard out. Trostre were having the better of the play and were putting a lot of pressure on Wellfield, who were getting complacent and making errors all around. Greene was forced to push a low shot around the post and also did well to turn the ball over the bar when it was looping over him and into the net. But from the resulting corner, a near post header was flicked into the top corner. Trostre were well up for the game now and Wellfield were unable to play the football they did in the first half because the pitch was in such a bad state now. Trostre soon levelled the scoreline when another corner was headed into the bottom corner. Trostre had noticed Wellfield's weakness at defending corners and when they awarded another one looked to take the lead for themselves. A Trostre player did get onto the end of it and the ball seemed destined for the goal, but 16 year old Nathan Jones, who had come on as a substitute to make his first competitive senior appearance, managed to head it off the line. Steff Youngman was then gifted another opportunity as Johnny squared another ball to leave Youngman finish from a yard out, but Steff mishit the ball and somehow missed again. Steff was disappointed with himself and instantly walked off the pitch in disgust. Andrew Kirkhouse was forced to bring centre back Alun Bevan on to replace Steff as striker. Alun's presence made an impact on the field and after just 5 minutes, he rescued Wellfield from trouble by scoring a great header. Wellfield had to see out the result now and slowed the tempo down, but Johnny Thomas managed to secure the 3 points for Wellfield in the last couple of minutes by dribbling past a couple of markers and smashing the ball into the roof of the net.
Full-Time: Trostre 2-4 Wellfield Athletic
Wellfield will most certainly be relieved to have got the 3 points from this game after letting Trostre back in the game after going 2 up. Wellfield played some great football in the first half, but as the pitch cut up it became harder to pass the ball on the ground. It was also great to see U16s captain Nathan Jones make a solid debut for the club today. |
