When these two sides playing each other earlier in the season, it was Wellfield who came away with all 3 points after a 3-0 win. Tumble knew going into this match that they would have to lift their game in order to get anything from it.
Wellfield clearly played the better football throughout the first half but Tumble did cause a threat and constantly applied pressure with some long balls. Darren Greene pushed one Tumble effort wide and at the other end of the pitch Johnny Thomas' direct running was always a threat. It was Wellfield who took the lead when a long through ball from Daniel Thomas left Johnny through on goal who scored a great goal with a looping first time shot from 25 yards. But when Darren Greene brought down the Tumble winger, the referee pointed to the spot and after that was put away, the scores were once again level. Gavin Porter almost took the lead for the visitors but Stephen Greene blocked his backpost header off the line. Chris James had a decent chance before the break but his shot was straight at the Tumble keeper.
Half-Time: Wellfield Athletic 1-1 Tumble
After an even first half, both sides knew that they could win the game and that the next goal would be important. Tumble continued to put pressure on Wellfield and were awarded with that crutial goal. When Steff Whitten stayed down with a head injury after heading away a corner many players expected the referee to blow up for a head injury. But Tumble's Angelo Dragone played on and scored with a powerful 25 yard strike. Mikey Charles was introduced to join fellow Under 16's teammate Nathan Jones on the field. Mikey offered something different upfront but his inexperience showed when he lacked patience and rashly hit a couple of shots first time. When Johnny Thomas was brought down in the box, Wellfield were awarded a penalty of their own, which Johnny tucked away. When Mikey was brought down after going though on goal, Wellfield felt hard done by when the referee thought the defender took the ball. But Tumble had a couple of chances of their own to take the lead once again. Stephen Greene cleared another effort off the line, while Darren Greene produced a good save to prevent Gavin Porter again. Mikey Charles came close with another shot but his best chance came when the Tumble keeper got caught out of goal, but Mikey lifted his shot over.
Full-Time: Wellfield Athletic 2-2 Tumble
This game could have gone either way in the end with both sides having chances to win it late on. But it is fair to say that a draw was a fair result today. Wellfield's next opponents are Hendy who are yet to get off the mark this season, losing all 15 of their league games played. |
