After already beating Trostre 4-2 earlier in the season, Wellfield were most certainly looking to pick up all 3 points this afternoon. But with strikers Steff Youngman and Johnny Thomas both out, the home side had to rely on someone else to get the goals.
The first clear cut chance of the game fell to Trostre when their forward broke free down the flank and cut in, but Darren Greene pulled off a good save to keep the ball out. But from the resulting corner, Greene spilt the ball and had to rely on Chris Whitten to block the follow up shot. Trostre had another great chance just minutes later when the winger broke free and squared the ball to his teammate but just as he was going to finish, Stephen Greene dived in with a vital tackle. But this game wasn't all going the visitors way. Mikey Charles and Bobby Vaughan both came close but had their efforts blocked from going in by defenders. Leigh Williams also struck his shot over when the ball fell kindly for him after a scramble in the box. But neither side were able to take a lead before the break.
Half-Time: Wellfield Athletic 0-0 Trostre
Early in the second half, Simon Evans had a good chance but he missed twice from a goalline scramble. But then Trostre took the lead after a good through ball was poked in first time. Trostre almost doubled their lead but Darren Greene pulled off a good near post save to keep out Dan Jenkins' shot. Wellfield changed things around a bit and part of that was bringing on Nathan Jones, whose brother and father were both in the Trostre line-up. Within minutes, his brother was sent off for Trostre with a second yellow for a late tackle on Nathan. Wellfield were given a lifeline 10 minutes from time when a late tackle from Nathan's father Carl, on Chris Hickey left the referee no choice but award a penalty. Stephen Greene tucked away the penalty to level the scores. Wellfield were suddenly on the front foot and soon Steff Whitten struck over while Chris James and Chris Whitten both missed from long range. Trostre were struggling and things turned even worse for them when Ashley Lewis was given a second yellow for another mistimed tackle. Wellfield only had 5 minutes left on the clock now and piled the pressure on the visitors. The last chance came right at the end when Hickey broke down the wing and his square ball found Chris James. But Chris took too long and after taking a touch found his effort blocked from going in.
Full-Time: Wellfield Athletic 1-1 Trostre
It was a game that could have gone either way, but Wellfield will be thoroughly disappointed that they didn't take advantage of the extra man. Wellfield's next opponents are Felinfoel who knocked Wellfield out of the senior cup earlier in the year. |
