Since Felinfoel took the Division 2 title from Wellfield last season and also knocked them out of the Senior Cup earlier in the year, Wellfield were determined to take a victory this afternoon.
The game began slowly and neither side really took hold of the game in the first half. Both sides moved the ball into dangerous positions but couldn't take an advantage. Johnny Thomas struck a shot over for the visitors and Simon Evans' volley was also off target. But Wellfield came even closer when Johnny Thomas hit the post with a shot from outside the box. Felinfoel didn't really trouble Darren Greene in the first half due to some good defending in front of him.
Half-Time: Felinfoel 0-0 Wellfield Athletic
The second half was a different story though and Felinfoel were much more dangerous on the attack. Defensively, they managed to cope with the visiting strikers but Wellfield still created chances. Darren Greene was forced to make an important save when he poked a long shot wide. But from the resulting corner, Felinfoel managed to take the lead when a free header at the back post found the back of the net. Wellfield were disappointed to find themselves behind and were desperate to equalise. After Mikey Charles won a 50/50 with the Foel keeper, it seemed like he would score but his shot was blocked. Stephen Greene made an important last ditch tackle to prevent Felinfoel scoring another when a square ball found a striker free just yards out. Chris Whitten also had a great chance but he misjudged the bouncing ball 6 yards out and tried to head the low ball when using his feet would have been a better option. Johnny Thomas' came close but his front post header bounced off the crossbar. But Felinfoel managed to grab another goal when a goal kick cleared the back 3 and left the Foel striker through to lob over Greene.
Full-Time: Felinfoel 2-0 Wellfield Athletic
Another disappointing result for Wellfield in a game where they were looking to pick up maximum points. Wellfield have been in poor form of late and need to find the quality that they had earlier in the season. Wellfield's next opponents are Trallwm, who are having a good season and battling for promotion. |
