Wellfield's first game of the season was against Trallwm in the Star Cup, who are the side that beat Wellfield 1-0 after extra-time in the Challenge Cup. They had a great season last year, by also coming second in the league, earning promotion to the Premier Division.
Trallwm got off to a better start and started applying pressure to the Wellfield defence from the off. But the back four kept their shape well leaving no space for Trallwm in and around the box. Wellfield were being closed down on the ball very quickly and were forced to play quite directly. The first chance fell to the visitors but Paul Wright placed the ball just wide of the target. Just minutes later Liam Samuel's poked shot from close range was well saved by Darren Greene and the follow up shot was also blocked. At the other end, a long ball caught out the Trallwm defence and after Leigh Williams dribbled past the defender, he appeared to be held back, but the referee didn't give what Wellfield felt was a certain penalty. Steff Youngman had a decent chance but his free-kick struck the wall. The Wellfield defence continued to stay strong to ensure the sides were level at the break.
Half-Time: Wellfield Athletic 0-0 Trallwm
In the second half, fatigue started to show and Wellfield weren't able to keep up with the pace of the game. Everytime a Wellfield player had possession, a tackle was being put in on them and the home side felt once again that they were kicked off the park by Trallwm. Steve Harries and Leigh Williams both put a couple of dangerous crosses in but there was nobody there on the end of them. Jamie Bowen missed a sitter for Trallwm when he couldn't find the empty net from a couple of yards out when the ball found him on a pacy cross. The deadlock was finally broken when Nick Glendon gave away a penalty leaving Paul Wright to slot the ball in from 12 yards. Paul Wright doubled the lead minutes later when his shot from 20 yards found the top corner after taking a slight deflection. Jamie Bowen almost made up for his miss earlier when his lobbed shot from an acute angle bounced off the post and possibly over the line, but the referee played on. Trallwm striker Kris Brown weaved his way through but his shot was too close to Greene who saved. Wellfield tried to get back in the game but just couldn't find that killer ball that would create a clear cut chance. Mikey Charles had a headed effort blocked before it reached goal but Wellfield didn't really threaten apart from that.
Full-Time: Wellfield Athletic 0-2 Trallwm
Not the result Wellfield were hoping for today but there were some positives to take from the match. Defensively, Wellfield looked very solid throughout the game but they just couldn't deal with the constant pressure from some good forwards. Wellfield didn't really match Trallwm physically today and will look to improve on that on Saturday in the match with Penyfan. |
