After losing to Trallwm 2-0 in the week, it was important that Wellfield won this game to stay in the Star Cup. The opponents today were Penyfan, who won their first Star Cup match against Trostre 4-1 last weekend.
Wellfield got off to a good start and looked to get in behind Penyfan earlier on with Chris Davies forcing the keeper to save a low shot. When Mikey Charles took the ball past 2 defenders in the box, his square ball found Chris Whitten who failed to finish from close range. But Whitten made no mistake with his next opportunity, heading in at the back post from another Charles cross. Wellfield were soon 2 up when Matthew Jones leapt to head in Ryan Williams' corner. Wellfield were looking most dangerous outwide and were linking well together at times. Penyfan pulled one back when a long ball bounced through and was lobbed over Darren Greene. Penyfan pulled themselves level soon when Greene's mishit clearance was struck straight back over him from near the halfway line. Wellfield were disappointed to be level once again and needed the break to calm themselves down once again.
Half-Time: Wellfield Athletic 2-2 Penyfan
Wellfield had been playing the much better football throughout the game and continued that into the second half. Penyfan's threat had mainly been with the long ball but it was much more difficult this half now that they were against the wind. Wellfield looked the more likely to score with Chris Davies putting in some good crosses and Steff Whitten just missing the top corner with a free-kick. But Wellfield did take the lead once again when Mikey Charles curled the ball in from 20 yards with his left foot. Kirky made a couple of changes, one of which involved bringing on Rob Owen, who was making his first senior appearance. Chris Davies was also moved upfront and it didn't take him long for him to make an impact. When he was put through on goal he made no mistake and buried the ball into the bottom corner. Chris soon broke through on goal again and put the ball in the same corner to score his second. Penyfan came close to a consolation goal near the end with a lobbed shot, but Greene, who had had a poor game today tipped the ball onto the crossbar.
Full-Time: Wellfield Athletic 5-2 Penyfan
An important victory for Wellfield today and what was more encouraging was that some very good football was played at times. There are a lot of players to come back to this side and Andrew Kirkhouse will have some big decisions to make for the next game against Trostre. A win there will see Wellfield through to the next round considering Penyfan lose to Trallwm on the same day. |
