Wellfield lost their first Star Cup game 2-0 against Trallwm and beat Penyfan 5-2 in the second. Therefore a win today against Trostre would see Wellfield into the next round.
Wellfield got off to a great start and put pressure on Trostre straight away. Johnny Thomas tested the keeper early on with a couple of powerful efforts while Mikey Charles also forced him into action. Trostre were reduced to a couple of amibitious efforts and a volley from 10 yards that just missed the target. The lead came halfway through the half when Mikey Charles went on a long run, taking on four players and finishing well to complete a pretty solo effort. Wellfield were playing some nice football at times and were in control of the game, often threatening the opposition goal often. Matters got worse for Trostre though when Anthony James was sent off for a foul on Chris Davies just before the break. The Trostre keeper pulled off a great save just before the break to keep out a close range effort from Ryan Williams.

Wellfield sat back a little bit in the opening stages of the second half and looked to threaten on the counter attack. But once things settled down again, Wellfield resumed to control the game throughout the pitch. Leigh Williams came close but the Trostre keeper made another great save by tipping the ball over. Johnny Thomas did well to beat his marker in the box and when the Trostre defender used his hand to block the ball, the referee awarded Wellfield a penalty. Johnny struck the penalty into the bottom corner to put the visitors 2-0 up. Steff Whitten made it 3-0 when he broke into the box and finished well with his left foot from a tight angle. Trostre came close with a shot from 20 yards out but Darren Greene pulled off a great save by tipping the ball over. Johnny Thomas completed the scoring when he broke into the box and slotted the ball into the bottom corner.

Another good win for Wellfield which books them a place in the next round of the competition. Their opponents look likely to be Bwlch, who are favourites to finish top of their group after beating Albies 6-3 today. |
